The planned 24 April polls were postponed after four member federations failed to agree on their voting officials
It is now official that the delayed National Olympic Committee - Kenya (NOC-K) elections will take place on Thursday 19 June at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue.
A Friday 23 May communique to 26 member federations confirmed that the electoral congress will finally take place on the said date, in pursuant to the NOC-K Election Rules and Regulations of 2025.
The announcement clears the path for the election of new Executive Committee members, following the postponement of the previous electoral congress on 24 April in Westlands.
Then, four federations - Kenya Volleyball Federation, Kenya Handball Federation, Kenya Triathlon Federation, and Kenya Taekwondo Federation - forced the adjournment of the planned polls after failing to agree on their respective voting officials.
The development capped rocky hours leading up to the congress, which involved the four federations seeking to halt the process through a myriad of court cases at the Sports Dispute Tribunal and the High Court respectively.
The issue in contention was - and likely remains - the interpretation of sections in both the NOC-K Constitution, and the 2025 Election Rules and Regulations.
Section 17.4 of the NOC-K Constitution stipulates nominations (of voting officials) are only valid if signed by both the president and/or secretary general of the respective federation, while Article 5.2 of the 2025 Election Rules and Regulations indicates that the federation is to be represented by two delegates - one being either the president or secretary general - who will carry the vote, as long as a letter is signed by both top officials designating them.
On the table to go with the election on the new date, will also be a declaration that the congress “has been convened in compliance with the constitution of NOC-K.”
The polls, set to be conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), were earlier this month delayed in honour of the late Kenya Basketball Federation Chairman Paul Otula, who passed away on 1 May.
NOC-K President Paul Tergat announced that the Executive had resolved to set the new election date after Otula’s burial, which was held on Friday 23 May.
